Penalty upheld in congressman's drilling dispute

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has upheld a $26,000 fine against a company embroiled in a dispute with U.S. Rep. Jared Polis after the congressman complained about drilling activities on property near his weekend retreat in Weld County.

Polis said Sundance Energy had an illegal well that was too close to his property. Inspectors found one well violated state laws requiring buffer zones.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Polis said the penalty was insufficient and laws regulating the industry need to be changed.

Sundance Energy CEO Eric McCrady stated in an email Friday that the company did not protest or appeal the fine.
